Piston packing.-A wearing-ring for protecting the side of a packing-ring groove is formed in two interlocking parts 5<a>, 5b, Fig. 11, each part being split or segmental. Each part may be of L section, or one part may be of L section and the other of rectangular cross-section. A part 5a of L section may engage a groove in the part 5b, in which case the flange 14 of the part 5b may be prolonged. Alternatively, a central rib on the part 5<a> may engage a groove in the part 5<b>. The part 5<b> may be welded to the side of the packing-ring groove, or be secured by pins or otherwise. In a modification the wearing-ring consists of two split rings arranged to break joint, the ends of each ring carrying pins 7, Fig. 9, engaging holes or grooves in the other ring.
