Abstract
153,802. Goold, L. W., (Stark, O. G.). Jan. 10, 1920. Piston packing; pistons.-A piston comprises a ring portion divided into segments and means for putting the segments under expansion strain in circumferential direction, so that the piston presses against the wall of the cylinder. In one form, the piston comprises two rings 1, 2 connected by members 3 carrying bosses 4 for the wrist-pin 8. Each member 3 is cut nearly halfway through at 5, and these cuts are intersected by cuts 6 in the ring, so that the ring 2 is divided into two segments. The bearings 7 for the pin 8 are slightly inclined downwards, so that when the pin is inserted the members 3 are bent outwards, and the segments are moved circumferentially with respect to the ring 1. Before or after the insertion of the pin 8, the segments are forced down into the position shown in Fig. 4 to close the cuts 5, and are then treated, as by heating, to fix them in that position. The top of the ring 2 is then finished to a smooth surface to receive the head 9. The head 9 has a flange 10, which may carry a flange 11 to engage a groove in the ring 2 to lock the head in position. Keys 12 may be seated in slots in the ring 2 and engage notches in the flange 10. The diameter of the ring 2 while in tension is slightly larger than that of the cylinder, so that the piston, when inserted, will press on the cylinder walls.
