Abstract

Piston packing; pistons.-A method of making a piston consists in finishing the operative circumferential surface while the ring portion on which the surface is located is subjected to strains acting in opposite directions, means being provided for limiting, during the finishing operation, the strain to which the piston is not normally subjected while in operation. In one way of carrying the invention into effect, a casting consisting of two rings 1, 2 connected by members 3 carrying bosses 4 for the wrist-pin 9 is used; and the ring 2 and head are divided into the segments by a cut 7 and the bearings for the pin 9 are inclined slightly downwards, so that, when the pin is inserted, the segments are forced apart. A wedge-shaped channel 11 is formed across the head symmetrically with respect to the cut 7, and a wedge-shaped plate 12 is inserted therein. The two segments are then drawn together by means of a nut and bolt 16 in lugs 6, and while so compressed the piston is finished, preferably to a slightly tapered shape. The cut 7 is closed by keys 13 inserted in cross-cuts in the ring 2. The piston when finished is inserted in the cylinder, and the nut 17 is turned to relieve the compression and allow the segments to press against the cylinder wall. Lubricant grooves are provided in the ring 1. A spring 21 in the piston head fixes the adjusting nut 17.
