Abstract

Piston packing.-In order to maintain a film of lubricant between a packing ring and the cylinder, the periphery of the packing is rounded or bevelled, the distance from the chord to the crown of the curvature being from one to ten thousandths of an inch. Where a single ring C is employed, its periphery is rounded or bevelled towards each edge, the angles being rounded off. A short cylindrical surface may be left at the middle of the ring. Preferably an auxiliary ring D is employed at the high-pressure side, or at each side of the main ring, their peripheries being shaped to continue approximately the contour of the main ring. The auxiliary ring on the lowpressure side may be undivided, and an additional undivided ring may be employed on the pressure side of the other auxiliary ring. More than three auxiliary rings may be employed, their peripheries, and in some cases also the surfaces of the piston flanges or junk ring, being shaped to continue the contour of the main ring. Preferably the rings. are of different depths, so that the auxiliary rings overlap the bottom of the groove of the main ring, or vice versa. The expansion of the auxiliary rings may be limited by flanges on the auxiliary rings extending under the main ring, or engaging shoulders on the main ring.
