Abstract

496,501. Fluid-pressure reciprocating engines ; connecting-rods. WHITEHEAD TORPEDO CO., Ltd., and JONES, L. June 21, 1937, No. 17296. [Classes 122 (i), 122 (ii), and 122 (iii)] In a radial-cylinder compressed - air, or other fluid - pressure engine for torpedoes &c., each connecting rod has a knuckle end 13 engaging an arcuate surface 15 inthepistor and is provided with staggered ports 2( adapted to co-operate with similar exhaust ports 19 in the pistor head. The knuckle end is mounted or two short gudgeon pins carried by the piston The axis of each cy. linder is offset from the radial plane in the direction of rotatior of the crank-shaft tc reduce heavy side thrusts on the piston during the working stroke. Arcuate feet 7 on the rods bear on the outer race ring 9 of a common big end bearing and are held in contact therewith by side plates 10 having lateral extensions engaging the under surface of the ring.
