Abstract

1,084,703. Rotating piston engines; ports. ROLLS ROYCE Ltd. May 6, 1965, No. 19245/65. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F2] In a two-stroke I. C. engine, a pin 31, secured to the connecting rod 12, is slidably received in a hole 30 formed in a rod 28 which in turn slides in a boss 27 formed in the piston skirt. Angular movement of the connecting rod thus results in oscillation of the piston about the cylinder axis. The crank-case-compressed air inlet port 51 and exhaust port 50 are diametrically opposed at the same axial location and so disposed relative to the oblique piston crown that port 50 opens before port 51 on the power stroke and closes before port 51 on the return stroke. A slot 26 in the piston skirt co-operates with an air inlet port 52 for the crank-case. The part-spherical end 23 of the connecting rod is provided with flats 24, 25 so that it may be inserted into a spherical seating in the piston and secured therein by rotating through 90‹. The piston ring slots may be oblique with respect to the cylinder axis, substantially elliptic rings then being provided. A deflector may be provided to direct air passing through port 52 on to the underside of the piston crown.
