Abstract

578,257. Spray carburetters; regulating HOBSON (AIRCRAFT & MOTOR) COMPONENTS, Ltd., H. M., and SIMPSON, T. Jan. 23, 1945, No. 1834. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] Fuel is discharged from an annular outlet formed by the ends of two coaxial sleeves or cylinders and the area of the outlet varied by a member which is subject to the pressure in the fuel inlet and effects relative axial movement of the sleeves. The fuel is supplied by an engine-driven pump through a metering orifice the fuel flow being regulated in accordance with engine speed, induction pipe pressure, induction temperature and exhaust pressure as described in Specifications 564,303 and 566,323. As shown, the fuel nozzle is fitted to the eye of a supercharger and fuel admitted at 46 through an annular groove 47 into the space between sleeves 41, 42 is discharged through an annular outlet 53 between conical ends 50, 51 on the sleeves, which have co-operating screw threads 54, 55. The outer sleeve is a press fit in a bore 44 of the supercharger and the space between the sleeves is sealed by a ring 57. The fuel pressure in the inlet 46 is transmitted through a passage 64 to a cylinder 63 where it acts on a spring pressed piston 62 and as the pressure varies the piston is displaced rotating the inner sleeve through teeth 59, 60 and causing the sleeve 42 to move axially to vary the size of the outlet 53..If the supercharger has no protruding extension shaft 45 the sleeve 42 is constructed as a solid cylinder.
