Abstract

152,704. Clarke, C. V. May. 14, 1919. Crank linkages.-In linkages for driving the crank-shaft from the pistons of internal-combustion engines &c., a cross-head sliding in a guide is connected by a link to a block sliding in a guide at right-angles to the first guide, the centre of the link or the end moving in the second guide being connected to the crank-shaft. The pistons 5 of a pair of opposed internal-combustion cylinders 2, Figs. 1 and 2, are connected by a common rod 7 carrying a cross-head 8 sliding in a guide 3. A link 9 pivoted in the head 8 has one arm carrying a block 10 sliding in a guide 11 at right-angles to the guide 3 and a second arm of equal length connected bv a connecting-rod 10 to the crank-pin 14 of the crank-shaft 15. Duplicate cylinders 1 may drive on the same crank-shaft. In a modification, Fig. 5, the piston-rod 6 carries a link 9 with one arm carrying a block 10 sliding in the guide 11 (not shown) at right-angles to the cross-head guide 3 and with a second arm of half the length pivotally engaging a counterweighted crank arm 16 on the shaft 17. As applied to driving a crank-shaft 15, Fig. 7, from two staggered cylinders at rightangles, the cross-head 8 of one piston-rod 23 slides in a guide 24, the arrangement being similar to that shown in Fig. 5 but with the head 25 on the piston-rod of the second cylinder connected to the long arm of the link 9 and sliding in a guide 26 corresponding to the guide 11. Glands 28 are provided at the inner ends of the cylinders so that combustible mixture may be fed to the said inner ends to be pressed during the working stroke of the pistons through ports 30 and external passages to ports 32 arranged below the exhaust ports. End-to-end and perpendicular cylinders may work in combination on a single crank-shaft.
