Abstract

Link-work.-In a device for converting reciprocating into rotary motion, applicable to internal-combustion engines, steam engines, &c., a curved slot 8 in a cross-head 5 on a piston rod 2 engages a crank-pin 10. One half of the slot 8 is so shaped that after the crank - pin has passed through 90 to 135 degrees from the commencement of the stroke of the piston, it will for the rest of the stroke be located in a portion of the slot which coincides with its path, and the other half of the slot first curves outwardly from the piston and then towards its extreme end coincides with the path of the crank-pin. The cross-head may be in two parts 5, 6, and the crank-pin may be provided with a loose bush 9. When a crank-pin is driven by a cross-head connected to the piston-rods of two opposed cylinders, the parts of the slot on each side of the axis of the rods are similar in shape.
