Piston packing. -In the pistons of steamengines, internal - combustion engines, compressors, pumps, &c., undue pressure of the packing-rings on the cylinders is prevented by perforating the packing-rings by one or more rows of ports 13, Figs. 2 and 3. Fluid has access to the space 11 at the back of the packing-ring, and by means of the ports 13, the pressure of the film of fluid between the ring and the cylinder is raised sufficiently to prevent undue pressure of the ring on the cylinder.
