" Cup-leather packing; packing, non-metallic; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; cooling.-Pistons, piston-rods, plungers, &c. are packed by a ring of lubricant contained in a space formed by cup-leather or other packing. In the piston packing shown in Fig. 1, the cup-leathers D, separated by a distance-piece E, are held in place by a cover L so as to form a space J containing lubricant, which is picked up from the surface of the cylinder C' by the edges of the cup-leathers, a valve I<1> being provided to relieve excessive pressure. This arrangement is applicable to piston-rods, as is also a modification in which lubricant is forced by a pump or otherwise into the lubricating-space in addition to being picked up by the cup-leathers. The lubricant may also be circulated through the lubricating-space to cool the parts. The cup-leathers may be replaced by a single ring D, Fig. 2, formed with perforations D'.
