As shown in Fig. 1, there is placed between the packing-ring A, which is expanded by a spring or springs in the space S, and the piston flange or junk-ring J a ring B with a suitable spring or springs W in a recess b for exerting an axial or lateral pressure. A ring of soft packing R is also forced into a recess at the inner edge. An expansible ring C with a tonguepiece T may also be combined with the ring B, as shown in Fig. 2. In modifications, the ring B, or an expansible ring similar to the ring B, may be lodged in a recess in the junk-ring or piston flange.
