27,523. Wilson, J. T. Dec. 15. Pistons.- A piston or piston valve is packed by split metal rings which are forced outwards by the fluid pressure. If the pressure b ecomes excessive, the rings are contracted by means of wedge rings. Fig. 1 shows part of a double-headed piston valve, the packing at each end being held between a flange B on the valve body and the junk ring E. The fluid under pressure is admitted beneath the packing-rings G through passages C in the body of the piston valve If the pressure becomes excessive, the rings G are contracted by wedge rings P which are forced laterally by a split wedge ring T expanded by the fluid pressure. A flange I on each packing-ring is received by a recess in the corresponding ring P. The split in the ring T is covered by a plate V riveted to one end of it. The split in each packing- ring is covered by a curved plate K, Fig. 2, entering recesses in the ends J of the split ring. A bevelled flange L on the plate K enters recesses in the sides of the ends J. Fig. 5 shows a modified arrangement in which the piston valve has at each end a single split ring G' with an unsplit clamping-ring P<1> and a split wedge ring T<1>.
