5910. Downie, T. March 17. Pistons.-A piston, piston valve, &c. is packed by an outer split ring a, coned inwardly and expanded by a correspondingly-coned solid ring c. Springs f move the latter ring axially with respect to the former. The split ring bears for practically the whole of its coned surface on the solid ring, so as to prevent fluid pressure on the split ring. A cod piece may be used to close the joint in the split ring. The ring may be in two parts, the joints in the rings being staggered.
