Piston packing.-A packing-ring for a piston or piston valve is formed in two parts with engaging surfaces formed so that the expansive action of the ring forces the two parts of the ring apart, and causes them to grip the sides of the packing-ring groove, thus preventing undue expansion. Figs. 2 and 3 show a split ring a formed with a waveshaped flange a<1> engaging the wave-shaped bottom of a groove in a split ring b. Two such compound rings may be arranged in grooves formed by a T-shaped ring. The rings may be expanded by fluid pressure, or by springs, or by both.
