Abstract

Piston packing. -Packing for the piston or plunger of a steam-engine, internal-combustion engine, or pump consists of two split rings d, e which together from a rhombus or rhomboid and are arranged in an inclined groove in the piston so that the fluid pressure tends to expand the packing. The piston head is preferably of reduced diameter above' the packing-ring groove. The meeting surfaces of the rings d, c are preferably not parallel to the sides of the groove, so that expansion of the rings tightens them in the groove and compensates for wear. The wearing surface of the ring d may be extended, as shown, so that an obtuse-angled groove is formed on the upper surface of the ring.
