17,918. Downie, T. Sept. 5. Pistons.-A piston or piston-valve packing-ring consists of segments a which are pressed apart by springs c contained in recesses b in the ends of the segments. The ends a' outside the recesses b overlap. In order to prevent undue pressure, the upper edge of the ring is bevelled and is thus restrained in its outward movement by the surface of the junk ring d<1>. Both edges of the ring may be bevelled. The inner edges of the segments may be rounded between the ends.
