A brass ring a, made in halves, rests on the bottom of the stuffing-box, and has projecting from its upper face six studs b surrounded by helical springs d, which fit over studs on a similar ring c. On the latter rests a brass ring e of wedge-section, also made in halves. This engages with another brass ring f, made in halves, pressed inwards by helical springs h. These rings e,f bear on whitemetal packing-rings i, made in three sections. A brass ring k, made in halves, rests on the ring f and is pressed inwards by a wedge-shaped ring l, also made in halves, on which rests a ring m, similar to the rings a and c.
