Abstract

Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-A piston e sliding in a box c and packed by a cup-leather makes a fluid-tight joint with a collar d on a rotating shaft a. The rubbing surface is supplied with lubricant by a cup p, the stem of which projects into a groove in the piston e, and prevents its rotation. The piston may be pressed against the collar by fluid admitted to the box c by a pipe h. Where the atmospheric pressure is in excess, the collar d is arranged inside the box c, and the atmospheric pressure may be partly balanced by fluid admitted to the box c. In order to pack against excess of pressure on either side, the shaft a may have a collar d on each side of a single piston e, or a piston e on each side of a single collar d. The pistons e may be formed with rounded peripheries to allow the pistons to bed well on the collars. The collars d may be shrunk on the shafts, or may be made in two parts detachably secured.
