Abstract
7269. Mills, C. K., [Brunswick Refrigerating Co.]. March 26. Cylinders. - The cylinder and other parts of a pump for compressing gas are connected together by ground and grooved joints so as to dispense with packing. The casing or lubricating chamber 1, the cylinder 16, its cover 20 acting as a valve guide, and a crown 21 are secured together by means of a tie-bar 23 and long studbolts 24, The joints 17 are made by providing one of the elements with sharp - faced concentric grooves, the surfaces being ground together with or without the use of an abrading-medium ; the grooves form annular, chambers in which escaping gas collects so that external leakage is reduced.
