Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-In a balancing device for a centrifugal-pump shaft or other shaft, axial displacement of the shaft causes a rise or fall of the balancing pressure and so causes the return of the shaft to the middle position. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the balancing-drum e, f mounted on the shaft b has packing-flanges g, h intermeshing with flanges l, m on the casing. If the shaft moves to the left, contact takes place between the rings h, m, thus preventing leakage from the space o. The pressure in the space o then rises by leakage from the pump past rings g, l. If the shaft moves to the right, the rings g, l come into contact, and prevent the entrance of highpressure fluid to the space o, while fluid leaks away from the space o past the rings h, m. The arrangement shown in Fig. 5 has conical surfaces 5, 6, which, as the shaft moves to the right or left, cause a gradual throttling of the fluid into or from the space o, while grooves 7 facilitate adjustment of pressure by enlarging the passage for the flow of fluid from or into the space o. Between the conical surfaces and the grooves, the surface is cylindrical.
