Abstract

Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for. - In labyrinth packing in which expansion due to rubbing contact causes separation of the packing parts, as described in Specification 225,936, cylindrical packing members 1<a>, 1<b>, coaxial with the shaft are employed, the packing constrictions 14 being between the interior of the free ends 2<a>, 2<b> and the exterior of the roots 6 of the adjacent members. The roots of the members may be stepped as shown at 3<b>. The free ends mav be bevelled and coact with further steps at the roots, or, alternatively, the free ends may be stepped, as shown, and coact with bevelled surfaces 13 at the roots. Where bevelled surfaces are employed, the constrictions can be adjusted by axial movement, and a packing assembly may comprise packings with adjustable constrictions and packings with fixed constrictions. The packing-members may be carried by supports 20, 21 secured on the shaft 18 and in the casing wall 19 between flanges 23, 24 and clamping parts 25, 26.
