Abstract
287,739. Stuthridge, J. H., and Hack, T. M. May 2, 1927. Stuffing - boxes, substitutes for; connected to source of high pressure; cupleather packing; boxes; glands. - Packing for a revolving shaft comprises U packings 12, 13 of india-rubber, or leather &c. pressed towards raised surfaces 8 at the ends of the stationary casing 3 by fluid admitted by an inlet 9, washers 18, 19 of vulcanite, ebonite or phosphor bronze &c. being interposed between the packings 12, 13 and the surface 8. The packings 12, 13 are contained in a casing 14 having an internal flange 15 formed with passages for admitting the fluid to the packings, which may be acted on also by springs 29. The casing 3 may be integral with the machine casing, or separate and bolted in position, being formed with a centring projection 11. The screw cap 7 has a prolongation 31 of hexagonal form to facilitate screwing and unscrewing. In a modification, the fluid is admitted to the casing 3 through a passage in the shaft, and the casing 14 is formed in two parts separated by a washer having passages for the fluid. The washers 18, 19 are replaced by flanges on the ends of the casing 14, or are used in addition to the flanges. Alternatively, the flange 15 may be formed in the interior of the casing 3, the casing 14 being in sections.
