Stuffing-boxes; substitutes for.-In a packing for a centrifugal-pump or other rotating shaft of the type in which a ring 8 carried by a diaphragm 11 rubs against, a stuffing-box 3 rotating with the shaft, the diaphragm is acted on by springs 16. The diaphragm is secured to the pump casing by a ring 9 and is secured to the ring 8 by a ring 13 and set screws. The springs 16 are housed in pockets in a bush 17. The stuffing-box 3 contains packing compressed by a gland 4 secured to the box 3 by bolts 6. The stuffing-box and the gland are in halves clamped to the shaft by set screws 7.
