Abstract

108,067. Newbigin, H. T. Sept. 25, 1916. Yielding supports.-In a journal bearing consisting of a number of self-adjusting blocks as described in Specification 23496/11 the blocks c are supported on a yielding mass of steel balls or the like f placed in at least three separate chambers surrounding the bearing. The balls are confined by steel or strips d which are inserted through slots j closed by pins k. The upper half b may be a plain bearing, in which case the balls in the lower half are placed in one or more chambers. The pressure of the balls may be adjusted by screws projecting more or less into the chambers. Oil may be pumped intc the bearing, glands being provided at the ends to prevent its escape.
