16,042. Hall, B. R. July 11. Fluid bearings.-A shaft is supported by oil or other fluid retained in compartments in a cylindrical casing. The casing 4 is closed at the ends by heads 11, fixed by bolts 13 to a sleeve 6, which is keyed on to and rotates with the shaft 3. Bars 17, projecting from grooves 21 in the sleeve 6, rotate in contact with the casing, and form compartments containing the oil. The sleeve is free to move radially on the bars 17. Spacing-rings 10 located in recesses 9 at the ends of the sleeve 6 hold the bars in contact with the casing 4, but are free of the shaft 3 and of the flanges 8 bounding the recesses 9. Packing 24 is placed between the rings 10 and the ends of the sleeve 6 to prevent the oil from leaking from one compartment into another. Split rings 22 lying in notches in the bars 17 prevent the escape of oil from the casing.
