Abstract

436. Newbigin, H. T. Jan. 11. Thrust bearings.-In a thrust bearing for shafts of the pivoted pressure-block type, as described in Specification 875/05, the blocks f are supported in a single carrying member a, and embrace more than half, but less than the whole, circumference of the shaft, so that the shaft can be lowered into position without interfering with the set-screws p by which the blocks are separately adjusted. The thrust bearing is combined with a journal bearing, the upper part of which is provided with an oil tray x, the end y of which forms a stop to prevent the blocks f from rotating with the thrust collar d. The lower part of the casing forms an oil well, and oil is removed from the collar d by a scraper l, and is diverted into the tray x, whence it is distributed to the bearing-surfaces.
