Abstract

847,240. Bearings. MURPHY, A. J. Feb. 6, 1958 [Nov. 13, 1956], No. 34717/56. Class 12 (1). The bearing surfaces 2, 3 of a downwardly loaded vertical shaft 1 and a bare component 4 respectively, are separated by a disc 5 meshing with a pinion 8 which is driven at a speed high enough to establish full hydrodynamic lubrication and eliminate boundary lubrication with its consequent high friction. The power for rotating the disc 5 may be derived either from an independent source, e.g. an electric motor, or from the main drive of the machine through gearing. In the case of two flat surfaces in slow relative movement the disc may have its centre located outside the area of the two separated surfaces. In a thrust bearing having annular bearing surfaces an intermediate concentric annulus may be used, an intermediate bush, driven from one end, being employed in the case of a journal bearing. Two intermediate members driven at the same speed in opposite directions may also be incorporated.
