Abstract

829,431. Bearings; lubricating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 14, 1956 [Nov. 14, 1955], No. 34817/56. Classes 12 (1) and 12 (3). A shaft 4, e.g. of a dynamo-electric machine, is rotatably supported within a bearing sleeve 10 and is lubricated by a washer-shaped wicking member 11 of absorbent material disposed between the bearing sleeve 10 and a thrust bearing which is constituted by a slinger member 15, fixed to the shaft, and a disc 13 forcefitted within an annulus 19 of absorbent material secured inside the bearing housing 7. As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft is provided with one or more axially-extending wedge-shaped recesses 26 the sides of which diverge away from one another in the direction of the bearing 10 from the wicking member 11 and which serve to receive lubricant from said member 11 and feed it to the sleeve bearing in both directions of rotation of the shaft; a similar recess or recesses also extend from the wicking member to the thrust member 13. In addition to being wedge-shaped, the recess or recesses preferably have their bottom surfaces sloping away from the wicking member in the direction of the sleeve or thrust bearing, Fig. 2; further, similar recesses may be provided on the shaft 4 diametrically opposite the recesses 26 but axially overlapping them. In a modification, Fig. 4, the recesses 26 are circumferentially removed from each other and, preferably, axially overlap; alternatively the recesses are formed in a line which is slanted to the axis of the shaft so as to be substantially helical. A second slinger member 17 is fitted to the shaft as shown, and the bearing housing 7 is packed with absorbent material 20.
