Abstract

791,470. Cylindrical journal bearings. CLEVITE CORPORATION. April 26, 1956, No. 12836/56. Class 12 (1). A self-aligning bearing for a rotatable shaft 25 comprises two flanged housing members 14, 15 having their outer flange portions connected together in face-to-face relationship and inner portions forming a truncated spherical portion which supports and holds together the two parts 21, 22 of the bearing. The abutting faces of the bearing parts have annular complementary grooved and projecting portions 28, 29 and a groove 30 is provided radially inwardly of the engaging faces. The groove 30 may be filled with oil retaining material such as felt to which oil or grease may be supplied through a fitting 31. A collar 35 secured to the shaft 25 is located in the groove 30 and acts as a thrust bearing. The housing is made of metal and the bearing parts of plastic material, preferably nylon. In a modification, the bearing is split longitudinally.
