Abstract
874,517. Stuffing-box substitutes. ROSICARELLI, M. July 6, 1959 [July 7, 1958], No. 23125/59. Class 122 (5). Packing for a ball or roller bearing comprises a ring of or incorporating a magnetized material, the ring being held magnetically to at least one of the bearing races 10, 11. The embodiments shown in Fig. 1 are a magnetized packing ring 14 of metal, for example steel, which bears magnetically against both races 10, 11 and a packing ring 15 of rubber, polytetrafluorethylene or other suitable synthetic plastic and elastomeric material having its outer peripheral portion held against the outer race 10 by a magnetized metal ring 16, preferably bonded to the washer 15, and its inner peripheral portion engaging the inner race 11. Other embodiments shown in Fig. 2 are (a) a channel section packing ring 17 that fits into the space 13 with its flanges 17a, 17b contacting the cylindrical surfaces of the outer and inner races respectively, the flange 17a being held against the outer race 10 by a magnetized ring 18 which may be a segmental metal ring or a continuous ring of elastomeric material having magnetized powder dispersed therein and (b) a packing ring 19 comprising outer layers 20, 21 of rubber &c. and an intermediate layer 22 of rubber mix charged with magnetized powder material. In further embodiments, Fig. 3 (not shown), the packing rings are of elastomeric material with magnetized powder dispersed therein.
