Abstract
116,960. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). Aug. 3, 1917. Channels and reservoirs in bearings. - One of the members of a shaft bearing is flexible and is supported over its whole surface by a resilient spring bed which can yield locally. The device is applicable to thrust and journal bearings of water wheel generators, marine propeller shafts, steam turbo-alternators, &c. Lubricating grooves 15, 18, Fig. 1, are formed in one or both of the bearing surfaces. The plate 12 is cut through along one of the radial grooves 18, or it may be made in two parts. The bearing is enclosed in an oil bath. Oil enters by a pipe 27 and falls on to an annular baffle plate 28 to prevent surging. Surplus oil passes down an overflow 29. The oil has access through a radial passage 30 to the inner ends of the grooves 15, 18. Fig. 8 shows the application to a journal bearing. Oil is forced into the bearing at 86 and passes upwards through radial and annular passages 84, 87 escaping at 88; oil holes are formed through the flexible bearing 82. Plates 97, 98 are secured to the sides of the rings 83, 74 to hold the parts in position and to retain oil.
