Abstract
231,475. Sperry Gyroscope Co., (Assignees of Schein, A. E.). March 31, 1924, [Convention date]. Addition to 193,381. Thrust and fluid bearings.- In the bearings described in the parent Specification the babbitt or like bearing material and the material of the supporting base have substantially the same temperature coefficient of expansion so that film lubrication can take place at all temperatures. The supporting base 20 for the babbitt blocks 25 may be in one piece or may consist of a number of wedge blocks 21, Fig. 3, secured to a base ring by interlocking parts 22 and by screws 23 the blocks being separated by lubricant grooves 30. The blocks of each set 21, 25 may be integral with each other respectively. A composition of a babbitt and a brass for the blocks and base respectively is given in the Specification. As applied to a propeller thrust bearing the babbitt blocks 25, Fig. 1, on opposite sides of the flange 14 are tapered in opposite directions. The bearing casing 12 has a sealing ring 13 and a flange 33 so that lubricant supplied under pressure through an inlet pipe 31 fills the casing and passes out of the bearing through the passages 35, 37. The shaft 10 has radial passages extending outwardly from an axial oil passage 40. For relieving a bearing of initial load, passages 45, 46, Fig. 3, may be formed in the parts 25, 20 and connected to a source of oil at a relatively high pressure.
