Abstract

369,781. Fluid bearings. LEISTRITZ, P., 29, Markgrafenstrasse, and BURGHAUSER, F., 36, Bulmannstrasse, both in Nuremberg, Germany. May 6, 1931, No: 13364. [Classes 12 (i), 12 (ii), and 12 (iii).] The rotor of a steam or gas turbine or compressor is supported in the casing by one or more journal or thrust bearings utilizing the lubrication effect of the steam or gas. As shown in the Figure, a turbine rotor a supported by external oillubricated bearings b, c is mounted in the.casing with a fine lateral clearance of a few hundredths of a millimetre and is provided on its faces with wedge recesses e to which the working fluid leaks and there acts to take up the thrust. Balancing holes f connect the recesses on the opposite sides of the rotor. The recesses may be formed on the casing walls d and be connected by a balancing pipe g as shown on the lower half of the Figure. Pads forming wedge films may be used instead of the recesses e. To prevent the formation of water in the bearings by the bearing pressure causing partial condensation, steam at the initial pressure is circulated in chambers round the bearing.
