Abstract

8227. Glasgow, W. April 1. Fixed-abutment type; starting and stopping; packing drums &c.-Relates to rotary engines of the type in which the working fluid is admitted to expanding chambers afforded between contacting blades on the moving parts, and consists of an improved engine in which the two bladecarrying members have an angular eccentricity obtained by mounting one upon an oblique portion or collar of the shaft of the other. A spherical type of engine is shown in Fig. 2, in which a sphere 5 is mounted loosely on a Z crank O of a shaft 4, and carries helicoidal or similar radial blades 6, a boss on which enters a groove in an outer sphere 2 to prevent relative rotation. The sphere 2 is attached to a hollow shaft 4 and carries similar blades 3. Steam enters by the pipe 8', and leaves by the pipe 9 in supports 10. The blades roll on one another and form constantly expanding chambers for the steam. Either shaft may be braked or stopped, and the inlet pipe 8<1> is branched and each branch has a stopping and starting valve closed by the stoppage of one of the shafts. A conchoidal type is similar but with a stepped outer shell, while a disk type is shown in Fig. 7, having a disk 2 with a spiral groove 3, in which works the spiral blade 6 attached to a conical disk 5 mounted loosely on an inclined collar fixed on the shaft 4. The disk 2 is attached to a shaft 1 and packing-rings 13<1> are provided where the shafts pass through the casing 10. Similar packing-rings 6 may be provided in the supports 10, Fig. 2. The surface of the disk 2 may also be covered with a wide spiral packing-strip acting as a cushion. The engine may be used as a pump or blower.
