Abstract

325,930. Bryant, C. W., and Brotherhood, Ltd., P. Dec. 31, 1928. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for. - Leakage between the rotor of a compressor and its casing. is prevented by providing.the rotor surfaces with helical and spiral grooves which pump fluid between the surfaces against the pressure of the fluid tending to escape. The rotor a of the compressor has spiral packing-grooves on the lefthand side, and helical grooves on the right. The casing b has inlet passages c and a delivery chamber e. The circumference of the rotor has helical grooves i which force the packing-fluid into the casing. When helical grooves are used on both sides' they are of opposite kind. Alternatively or in addition to the, helical grooves, spiral grooves k may be provided to force the packing-fluid against the pressure of the gases to be compressed. Corresponding packings on the two sides are preferably of similar type. The annular space h may be kept at a low pressure and the disc friction of the rotor reduced. Leakage may be withdrawn through a suitable drain m. The packing-fluid is supplied at points n at relative low pressure. The shaft o has oppositehand helical grooves r, s, as described in Specification 324,763.
