Abstract

899,663. Stuffing-box substitutes. FROLICH, B. Feb. 17, 1960 [Feb. 28, 1959], No. 5660/60. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a thrust bearing or slip ring seal, lubricant, e.g. water or oil is supplied between the rotating and fixed rings, the bearing face of the former having a ring or rings of recesses which cooperate with a groove or grooves in the fixed ring to increase the pressure of the lubricant. A rotating shaft 1 has secured thereto a disc 2, Figs. 1-3, having recesses 5 thereon, the disc engaging a ring 3 having a groove 6 with a lubricant inlet 7. The lubricant enters the inlet 7, is swirled around in the groove 6 by the rotation of the disc 2, thus increasing the pressure, and then penetrates between the bearing faces to lubricate and also take up the axial thrust on the bearing; several arrangements of grooves in the ring 3 are described, and the ring may be replaced by a segment. In a modification, Figs. 14, 15, the shaft 1 carries disc 2 spring urged against rings 3 integral with a journal bearing 11, and the sump 4 is filled to a point 12. Lubricant passes into the inlets 7, through the grooves 6, and a portion of the lubricant passes through grooves 13 to lubricate the journal. If the pressure between the faces increases too much the discs 2 are moved axially against the springs and the lubricant flows more easily. In a further modification, Figs. 23, 24, the groove 6 in the ring 3 has an inlet and discharge 7, 9 at each end which are controlled by balls 25, 24. When the disc 2 rotates in one direction one of the balls 25 is lifted from its seat and the ball 24 at the opposite end of the groove 6 allows the lubricant to flow as shown by arrows in Fig. 24. If disc 2 rotates in the opposite direction the opposite balls 24, 25 open and the previous mentioned balls close their respective passages to allow a reverse flow of lubricant. A slip ring seal for a rotary pump, Figs. 19-22, comprises a ring 2 having cells 5 and a lubricant collecting chamber 22, the ring being spring urged against a stationary ring 3 carried by a shaft 1 to form a seal. Ring 3 has a lubricant groove 6 and a lubricant collecting chamber 27 and the lubricant pressure is increased in groove 6 by rotation of ring 2.
