Abstract

186,595. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Hodgkinson, F.). Sept. 30, 1921, [Convention date]. Fluid bearings.-A film of lubricant is established betwen the contacting surfaces of a bearing prior to their relative rotation by supplying lubricant therebetween at a number of points at pressures proportional to the bearing pressures adjacent to such points in order to prevent injury which is liable to be caused when a member commences to rotate in a dry bearing. The stationary surface 10 of a journal bearing is provided with a number of separate grooves 11 arranged symmetrically about the axis. Lubricant is supplied to the grooves from a pump 14 through a pipe 13 and branches 16. Each branch 16 communicates with a grooves 11 through a small aperture 17, which serves to reduce the pressure. The lubricant in the groove where the bearing pressure is large is not able to pass readily between the bearing-surfaces, with the result that the pressure of lubricant in such a groove increases and approaches the pressure in the pipes 16, while the pressure of lubricant is smaller in a groove where the bearing pressure is small. In a modification, each groove 11 is supplied from a separate pump. The applications of the invention to an ordinary thrust bearing and to a Michell thrust bearing are also described.
