Abstract

911,449. Lubricating bearings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 30, 1960 [Jan. 12, 1960], No. 1113/60. Classes 12 (1) and 12 (3). The shaft 1 of a gas blower has a thrust collar 5 and a pair of helical grooves 12, 15, and is carried by a bearing 2 having journal surfaces 6, 7 and an oil chamber 8. Collar 5 engages thrust face 9 of the chamber and oil is supplied to seal the thrust faces during rotation of the shaft, and to lubricate the journal, from a pump 10 via a pipe 11, and grooves 12, 15, and excess oil flows through a pipe 14 to a sump 13. A header tank 17 is connected to the blower gas circuit at 20, and to chamber 8 through a non-return valve 18. A bleed-pipe 16, facilitates lubricant circulation in journal 6, and when the speed of the shaft is insufficient for the grooves 12 to supply the seal, a pump 21 actuated when the gas circuit is equal to the pressure in chamber 8, supplies oil to tank 17, and oil flows into the chamber, thus providing a static seal.
