Abstract

19,555. Whitehead, A. Aug. 29. Lubricant conveyed by mechanical means.- A shaft bearing or axle-box is lubricated by oil raised from a well to a distributing-passage 10, which is provided with an overflow passage 12 at the end remote from the oil-raising means, so that a constant circulation of oil is effected. A ring 1, suspended loosely on or fixed to the shaft 6, raises oil from the well, and the oil is removed by a wiper 2 formed with flanges 3, 4, which deliver the oil to the passage 10. In a modification, two oil-raising rings are provided in the centre of a bearing, and the wiper delivers oil on both sides to passages 10, each of which has an overflow. In the case of a shaft which rotates in either direction, the ring 1 has two diameters, or two separate rings are used, and the wiper is designed to deliver oil from one of the rings for each direction of rotation. Grooves 51, 53 in the bearing prevent the escape of oil.
