Abstract

266,479. Evans, W. P. Dec. 3, 1925. Stuffing - boxes, substitutes for. - Packing for the bearings and lubricating boxes of rollers and axles comprises a ring C of L or T section sliding in a casing in the stationary or revolving part and pressed on to a radial surface on the other part by axial springs e<1> acting through a ring E and packing F. The packing F may be soft packing or a split metal ring of wedge section. Rotation of the rings C, E may be prevented by studs and pins carried by the bearing B and the ring C engaging holes in the ring E. The pins in the ring C may be replaced by studs c<2> in the ring E engaging slots in the ring C. The rings C, E may be housed in a recess in the bearing B, or in a casing ring secured to the bearing. In a modification the rings are replaced by flat spring-pressed rings with a packing washer between them. The soft packing F', Fig. 7, is contained in a dovetail reoess formed partly in the ring C and partly between rings A<1>, B' secured to the casing B.
