Abstract
233,961. Gill, H. A., (Soc. d'Exploitation des Brevets " Holtorp " Soc. Anon.). Sept. 23, 1924. Oil, retaining. - The escape of oil from the journal bearing of a railway or tramway vehicle or the like is prevented by a ring b rotating with the axle a and provided with one or more grooves g, the walls c, d of the groove being spaced slightly from the walls of the chamber m of the journal box n, or from packing shields o disposed therein, such that the narrow spaces are bridged by oil collecting at the peripheries of the walls c, d due to centrifugal action. Additional oil then flows around on the inner surface of the chamber m or packing shields o into a well at the bottom of the chamber m, which communicates with the journal box by an opening g. When the axle is at rest, oil at the periphery of the walls c, d flows into the groove g and thence into the well. The axle a is capable of axial movement in the ring b.
