Fig. 3 is an end View of the wheel shown in Fig. 1.
One object of the invention is to provide a mine car that shall have the bearing surfaces of the wheels which take the end thrust, formed within the wheel hubs so as to be conveniently supplied with lubricating material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mine car wheel with a lubricating chamber formed in the hub and connected to the axle opening and with an end thrust bearing surface in the form of an annulus formed within the axle opening.
In a mine car wheel constructed in accordance with our invention a bearing surface in the shape of an annulus is formed on the hub within the axle opening for engaging an end portion of a journal box. The positioning of the thrust bearing surface within the wheel hub insures lubricating material for such surface.
Referring to the drawings, an axle 1 of a mine car is shown projecting through the hub 2 of a wheel 3 into an outside journal box 4. A sill 5 of a mine car is shown mounted in position-on the top portion 6 of the journal box.
A recess 7 is shown formed in one end of the hub 2 to provide a shoulder 8 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The shoulder 8 is adapted to engage a collar 9 which is located in the recess and which is fixedly mounted in any suitable manner on the axle 1. Preferably the collar 9 engages a shoulder 10 formed on the axle. The engaging surface of the shoulder 8 with the collar 9 is preferably tapered as shown in the drawing in order to insure the supplying of lubricating material to the bearing surfaces. A second shoulder 11 in the shape of an annulus is formed within the axle opening near the opposite end of the hub. Such shoulder 11 is adapted to engage an end portion of the journal box to take up end thrust. A lubricating chamber 12, which is formed in the hub 2 between the shoulders 1926. Serial No. 100,869.
8 and 11, is connected to the axle opening by means of a spiral groove 13. The lubricating chamber is also connected to the end of the hub by passageways 14: which extend through the shoulder 11. Such passageways are tapered or inclined as shown in Fig. 1 in order to permit the collecting of lubricating material in the chamber 12.
The bottom portion of the journal box 4: is provided with a lubricating cellar 15 and a portion 16 which projects into the axle opening of the hub 2 to engage the shoulder 11. The portion 16, which projects into the axle opening, serves also as a dust guard in the same manner as the collar 9 which engages the shoulder 8 at the opposite end of the hub. An opening 17 is provided in the end of the journal box for supplying lubricating material. The top portion 6 of the journal box is provided with an upwardly extending flange 18 which is fitted to the sill 5 and a downwardly extending flange 19 which is adapted to engage the journal box. Suitable'bolt holes 22 are provided in the top portion 6 of the box for receiving bolts (not shown) to secure the journal box to the sill. Walls 20 project downwardly and inwardly from the top portion of the journal box to provide a guideway for securing and holding the lower portion of the box in position. In Fig. 2 of the drawing, the lower portion of the box is shown provided with projecting lugs 21 which fit within the guideway formed bythe walls 20. The flange 19 limits the movement of the lower port-ion of the box in the guideway formed by the walls 20.
In a mine car wheel formed as above set forth it will be noted the bearing surface which takes the side thrust is positioned within the axle opening of the hub. Moreover, such bearing surface is directly connected to the lubricating chamber 12 within the wheel hub and to the cellar in the journal box. Consequently, such bearing surface may be conveniently supplied with lubricating material. In service the inner end of the portion 16 of the journal box and the surface 11 of the wheel are in frictional contact and can be thoroughly lubricated. Thus, the inner face of the flange 18 of the journal box is held free from contact with the wheel. Prior to the present invention the end of the journal box engaged the end of the Wheel hub and as these parts con1- monly ran dry or tree from lubricant undue wear resulted. l'll'though our invention is illustrated by means of an outside journal box of the sliding t IE6, it is to beui lerstood that other types out journal boxes, such as the so-called hinge type or the so-called pedestal type may be used it so desired.
What is claimed is:
1. In con'ibination, a car Wheel having a hub with an axle opening therein and adapted to be rotatul'ily mounted on an axle, and an end thrust bearing surface in the term of an annulus formed Within the hub and adapted to engage a bearing box.
2. In con'ibination, a car Wheel having a hub with an axle opening therein, an end thrust bearing surface in the form of an annulus formed Within the hub and adapted to engage the end of a bearing box, and a lubricating chamber Within the Wheel hub connected to the axle opening and to said bearing surface.
3. in combination, a car Wheel having a hub with an axle opening therein, an end thrust bearing surface in the form of an annulus formed Within the hub tor engaging a bearing box, a lubricating chamber formed within the hub and connected to the axle opening by a groove, and passageways for connecting said lubricating chamber through said annulus to the bearing box.
In combination, a car Wheel having a hub with an axle opening therein, an annular recess formed in one end 01' the hub around the axle opening for receiving a collar mounted on the axle, an end thrust hearing surface in the form of an annulus formed vithin the hub at the opposite end thereof for engaging a bearing box, a lubricating chamber formed within the hub and connected to the axle opening by a spiral gl'UOVG, and passageways for connecting said lubricating chamber through said annulus to the bearing box.
5. In combination, a car \vheel having a hub with an axle opening therethrough, and a shoulder formed on the hub Within the axle opening for engaging an outside journal box.
