Abstract

204,789. Pugh, J. V., and Rudge-Whitworth, Ltd. July 8, 1922. Dust, excluding; oil, retaining. - To exclude dust from and retain oil in bearings of wheel hubs &c., a felt packing-ring is pressed into a groove between fixed and rotating parts by an encircling tension spring. The packing-ring f, Fig. 1, encircles a distance ring a<1> and is pressed into the space between a fixed axle collar b and a hub flange d<2> by a coiled spring h bearing against a conical metal shield g. The packing is thus pressed against the flange d<2>. In a modification, the fixed collar b is bevelled and the packing is pressed into the wedge-shaped space thus formed; the shield in this case is split and has a concave outer surface. Fig. 9 shows a modification in which the spring h<2> bears against two metal wedge rings k, k' which expand a U-shaped packing-ring j in the space between the fixed and rotating parts.
