Abstract

112,866. Luard, E. S. March 30, 1917. Boxes. cup-leather packing; followers; grit excluding; packing, non-metallic; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-In order to exclude grit &c. from a stuffing box &c. of the type having an inner flange which is bolted to the cylinder &c. and an outer flange 6<a> retaining the packing, a ring 11 of lamb's wool &c. is retained between the flange 6<a> and a surrounding housing. The Figure shows the ring applied to the stuffing-box of a brake cylinder containing a rubber packing 15. The ring 11 is secured by a pressed metal cap 14, the cap and the box 6 being slotted at 18, 17 to accommodate the nuts of tho bolts 7. In a modification, the ring 11 is applied to a stuffing-box containing a cup-leather, and is secured between the end of the box and a flange and extension on the sleeve which secures the cup leather. The lamb's wool ring may be embraced by a metal band or spring.
