Abstract

1383322 Seals GIRLING Ltd 22 March 1972 [25 March 1971] 7878/71 Heading F2B A seal for the piston-rod 18 of a master cylinder of a vehicle braking system comprises a rubber annular body having a substantially plane end face 12 and two axially extending portions 14, 15, one portion 15 forming a flexible, radially inwardly directed sealing lip and the other, 14, having a radially inner face 14a, a radially outwardly extending face 14c and an end face 14b remote from the plane end face 12. Two seals 22, 24 are housed as shown in Fig. 3, in sealing contact with the rod 18 and a counter bore 17 in the cylinder and clamped between metal sealing rings 21 and 25 and a spacing ring 23. A drain hole 28 communicates with the space between the two seals. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6, the portion 32 of the seal 30 is interrupted by circumferentially spaced grooves 37. A seal of this type may be used in place of one or both of the seals 22, 24 in the arrangement shown in Fig. 3.
