Abstract
177,207. Evans, W. P. Nov. 26, 1920. Dust &c., excluding; oil, retaining in a combined bearing and lubricating-box for the neck of a calender bowl or roller. A packing-device is employed consisting of two rings a, b, Fig. 2, of which the ring b is secured to the bowl A or to the axle and the ring a fits slidably over the ring b and is caused to rotate therewith by studs e and has a vertical face bearing against the end wall of the bearing, being pressed thereon by a number of spiral springs c located in pockets b<1> in the ring b. The ring b may be provided with a piston-ring f, Fig. 4, or a ring of fibrous packing. In a further modification, the rings a, b, Fig. 5, are reversed in position and have flanges encircled by leather or like washers g secured together. The rings may be in segments or halves and may be of brass &c. Fibrous packing may be applied to the working faces. The device may be applied inside the box.
