Packing, metallic; packing, non-metallic; casings; grit, excluding.-In a grooved casing b containing metallic packing 3 the outer groove 2, contains a metal ring 4 comprising a number of segments encircled by a spring 7 and containing a ring 5 of felt or other absorbent material, the outer edge 4a of the ring 4 fitting closely against the rod to prevent entrance of grit. Holes 10 in the ring 4 allow access of lubricant to the ring 5. The edge 4a of the ring 4 may be flanged to provide a sharp edge extending outwardly along the rod.
