Abstract
585,394. Bearings. BOARDMAN, J. Feb. 18, 1944, No. 3095. [Class 12 (i)] In a journal bearing the wedge-shaped oil- 111m lubrication is effected by the stationary bearing bush being so supported in its housing as to distort under the working load to provide the wedge-shaped clearances between the rotating shaft and the stationary bush. As shown in Fig. 1 the bearing bush 10 is provided on its exterior with wedge-shaped recesses 13 and the intervening cylindrical portions 15 are firmly supported in a housing. Under working conditions the oil-film pressure causes a distortion of the bearing bush at the externally unsupported areas 13 so as to provide the required wedgeshaped oil-film spaces 23 on the interior surface 11 as shown in the developed view Fig. 3. Alternatively the housing may have the wedge-shaped recesses whereby a plain bearing shell becomes distorted under working conditions to provide the wedge-shaped oil-film spaces at the interior of the shell, Fig. 4 (not shown).
