Abstract
18,789. Putz, F. R. Aug. 16. Brasses and bushes.-A bearing or brass for shafts &c. of the kind in which white metal is secured in a shell or casing by means of a skeleton framework, is provided with means to prevent the shaft from being damaged by the screw or rivet that secures the framework to the shell in the event of the white metal being worn or melted, and also to prevent the shaft from coming into contact with the skeleton framework. For the former of these purposes, the screw or rivet B, Fig. 1, that secures the framework A to the shell C is placed in a countersunk hole B in the framework. For the latter purpose, one or more blocks G of gunmetal, brass, bronze, or other metal, harder than the white metal E, are placed within the bearing so as to be exposed and support the shaft if the white metal be worn down or melted. These blocks, when exposed, give an indication bv their colour that undue wear has taken place. The blocks G may be cast into some of the openings in the framework A, and may project through the framework into recesses in the shell C. The blocks may take the form of collars in tubular bearings, or of perforated sheets of bronze; they may be provided also in an endthrust bearing.
